Quality accommodation in the heart of the Charente countryside

VISITORS' BOOK | LIVRE D'OR

Had forgotten how quiet the world could be. If you want to pull out of the fast lane and need a serious unwind this is the place. This is a deeply relaxing part of the world. I came down here to paint and was struck by the vast landscapes and dramatic skies. You could drive for miles and see no one. A van parked by the side of a vineyard and one would look for the farmer. Sometimes literally Kms away chopping off side shoots on individual vines. The house notes cover everything and the owners love for the house and area becomes infectious. You want to look after this place. It has it all!

We have really enjoyed staying here! The house is very pretty, the interior lovely with every amenity: comfortable and practical. The pool is great and the garden has been my greatest pleasure! I’ve loved picking fruit and vegetables every day, as well as tending to their needs; watering and weeding. We’d love to come back! We arrived weary and worn out, and after two peaceful weeks in the sun, nourished by the garden’s gifts, the glorious sunshine and the beautiful surrounds of Ty Gwyn we have emerged new and repaired and rested. We loved our stay and will always have fond memories of our time here. Thank you!

We spent another amazing summer in this beautiful house! We love the new swimming pool and spent many days in Royan on the beach. On one occasion we went to a secluded beach on the Ile d’Oleron, and one afternoon we went kayaking on the river in Cognac – it was a great fun experience even though I shared a boat with my sister! This house is magical and we love every aspect of it!

We have all loved the area around the house. Loads of quiet walks and we have loved them all. Weather on our 2nd week – hot, hot hot!! – lovely and so good to have the pool for a refreshing dip. Braid (the dog) loved the dog bed – we will have to get her one now! I have loved having the veg lot to tend and water as I was having withdrawal symptoms from my own garden. Really quiet spot with only the sound of birdsong – bliss. We shall be sad to leave tomorrow.

What a perfect retreat - peace, quiet and sunshine. The house was just what we needed to let us relax. Trips to Cognac and Pons were superb and just driving around the countryside was like a picture. Hopefully we'll come back soon.

Cognac Retreat is a wonderful house, lovingly restored with loads of space for a large family. The surroundings are beautiful and the facilities provided are excellent. We are very sad to be leaving! Wonderful trips to the beaches of Royan, Bordeaux is stunning and closer to home Cognac and Pons were great. The highlight is the approach to the church of Echebrune - picture perfect and gorgeous inside.

We have had a wonderful week at Cognac Retreat - such a relaxing place and perfect for children. It is a long time since we have felt this relaxed. There are some amazing places nearby and we loved Pons and Cognac - the September festival was stunning! La Rochelle was fabulous too and the beaches near Royan were beautiful - unspoiled and backed by scented pine forests. Bliss. The house is a beautiful property in an unspoilt part of rural France. There is plenty of space downstairs with a large kitchen and dining area and separate living room - with facilities to watch movies projected onto the large chimney breast! The property is an old barn that has been renovated to a high standard with many period features retained. It is located at the end of a very peaceful lane in a small hamlet only a few kilometers from the picturesque town of Cognac.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Larceau. The house was very spacious, clean, comfortable and well equipped. It was also well placed to drive to numerous towns and villages in the region. We also made very good use of some great restaurants and cooked some lovely meals from the great local produce. Having broadband and all the UK TV channels was also good for relaxing in the evening. Our two dogs also really enjoyed themselves running around the garden and making friends with another lovely neighbouring dog. We were a little too hot on some nights - until we found a fan! Hopefully we will return!

One of the memorable things about this property is the setting: complete rural peace, with only the sound of the stream or the cooing of woodpigeons, occasionally punctuated by the distant sounds of farming. The town of Cognac, with restaurants, shops, cognac distilleries and galleries to wander around, is only 10 minutes away. Medieval Pons is also good to visit. As a group we found the huge kitchen a really convivial space, and cooler in the midday heat. The cosy sitting room has TV and, very useful, wifi broadband. The advert gives a pretty good idea of the property, and it would be impossible to show all the surrounding area, which is great for cycling, not too many hills! It's very secluded, just a few houses, and surrounded by trees, so only glimpses of the glorious countryside until you get up the lane. The owner was keen that we should have a good time and would answer any queries promptly. It has the feeling of a family home, garden has plenty of space, and we loved the hammock under the honeysuckle. Fairly basic shops in Ars, 5 minutes away, but the boulangerie is amazing. I would recommend it for both families and groups of adults, and would really like to go again, maybe out of season.

A magical week. Comfortable, light, airy, beautifully designed and kitted out! We spent days at Ty Gwn; in the pool, garden and chilling out in the house (nice and cool in the summer heat). Days out included a trip to the coast, a fabulous chateaux and of course our daily runs to get bread (the best I have ever tasted). Facilities are super - power showers, the ability to check our e-mails, huge dining area, DVD player, English TV (great for the kids' down time), every cooking utensil you could need, high chairs, comfy beds (we all slept very well) and all in a secure, quite, safe place.
We only wish this was our own holiday hideaway and wonder how nice it would be to sit by the roaring log burner in the winter!
Mary

We loved your house and were very comfortable. Jamie who is 5 couldn't spend enough time in the pool! We've done some exploring around the area and have had a really lovely holiday. We are totally enchanted by the region and are dreaming of having a home of our own somewhere around there some day. We have some lovely family memories.

This is a special place to stay, lots of space to be together indoors and having lots of fun in the pool!

A wonderful way to experience rural France. Your house is sensational - spacious but cosy. Thank you.

Ty Gwyn is just amazing - thanks for providing a place for the retreat. The house is very beautiful - and the big bedroom very comfortable. The kitchen/dining room was perfect for our many extended lunches and suppers, and the wooden floor good for a few dances! The village scenes are very inspiring for art work - and the surrounding fields and woods just wonderful to be in. The landscape around is incredible - from sun up, through the day, to sun down. The colours in September are so beautiful.

Our fortnight at Cognac Retreat/Ty Gwyn was by far the most relaxing and memorable holiday we can remember in France. Everything from the welcoming atmosphere at the residence and the quality and ambience in the accommodation were hugely to our satisfaction. The house is extremely conveniently situated in the heart of the Cognac region which offers a lot of choice in terms of sightseeing, leisure and relaxation. We would have no hesitation in recommending this fine rental accommodation to our friends, extended family or anyone making enquiries about an idyllic week or more in a beautiful area of the French countryside.

Thank you so much for sharing your fantastic home with us! It really is beautiful and I can see why you escape there at every opportunity. The space is great, the detail attentive, the facilities perfect and the whole feel is really homely.

Ty Gwyn looking very sunny in late February - all week! Chauffage centrale and underfloor heating particularly appreciated, as was the log fire in the sitting room in the evenings.
